The Business Case for Salt and Light?

What if understanding the intersection of faith and performance is the key to unlocking your true potential?

For many high-achieving professionals, the pursuit of career success often comes with a hidden cost. After decades of grinding, climbing the corporate ladder, and mastering complex technical domains, there is often a lingering realization: the job that promised fulfillment feels incomplete.

If you have ever felt that your professional life is disconnected from your deeper purpose, you aren’t alone. James Kawski, founder of HigherARC and a performance neuroscience coach, spent 35 years in the semiconductor industry before pivoting his career toward a new, profound mission: helping professionals of faith reclaim their purpose through the "Salt and Light" framework.

We recently sat down with James on the Crafted Journey podcast to learn more about his journey -from microchip engineering to human performance coaching - with a focus on how faith leads you home.

The Evolution of a Career: From Microchips to Mindset

James Kawski’s story is rooted in a technical foundation. After a long career in the semiconductor industry, he retired from the corporate world to focus on human growth and development. Today, he is a certified performance neuroscience coach with a focus on the psychological state of flow. (Editor's note, our favorite state by far!)

However, his transition wasn't just a change in industry; it was a shift in philosophy.

Influenced early on by mentors like his high school guidance counselor, Father Ted, who famously pushed him toward engineering when he expressed an interest in psychology, and later by Dr. Lynn Fuller at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Kawski learned the value of technical precision.

Yet, he realized that true human flourishing requires more than just technical skill; it requires a connection between one's faith and one's daily work.

The Salt and Light Framework: A Holistic Approach

When Kawski launched his coaching practice, he recognized that while traditional high-performance habits—such as productivity, clarity, and physiology—are essential, they often lack a foundational "why."

To address this, he developed the "Salt and Light" cohort. This structured program brings together 12 professionals for a 12-week deep dive into four foundational elements:

1. Spiritual Anchors: Connecting faith to the daily grind.

2. Aligned Work: Ensuring professional activities reflect personal values.

3. Longevity: Mastering physiology and psychology to sustain performance over the long term.

4. Togetherness: Managing relationships and community.

This framework is designed to help professionals move beyond the "suffering of success"—the realization that careers alone cannot fulfill our deeper human needs. As Kawski puts it, "Your calling is where your gifts meet the world's greatest suffering." (Editors note: If you listen to podcast, yes, I'm one of the cohort.)

Why Faith Changes the Coaching Equation

One of the most significant "aha!" moments in Kawski’s career came when he realized that bringing a shared faith perspective into his mastermind groups changed the nature of the conversation entirely.

"When you have these types of conversations with people that you’re close to... they worked great, but they didn’t work as well as they could," Kawski explains. "If I brought together people of faith who kind of have some of the same challenges... that particular group is going to really coalesce, crystallize quickly."

In a secular environment, professionals often guard their true thoughts to protect their image or maintain a competitive edge. In a faith-based cohort, Kawski found that participants were willing to drop those defenses. The shared belief system creates a common denominator that allows for rapid, deep vulnerability—a critical ingredient for professional growth and personal breakthrough.

Moving Toward a Unified Vision

Looking ahead, Kawski is not slowing down. He is currently pursuing a PhD in human growth and development, with a specific focus on the impact of Christianity on human flourishing. His goal is to blend his academic research, his coaching practice, and his active involvement in his church ministry, Netcast, to create a more comprehensive approach to supporting professionals.

His vision is clear: he hopes to see the integration of faith and work become a standard, rather than an outlier. By mentoring others and scaling the Salt and Light program, he aims to reach those who are trapped in the cycle of defining themselves solely by their careers.

Finding Your Own Integration

The lesson from James' journey is that your career and your calling do not have to be mutually exclusive. Whether you are an engineer, an executive, or a creative, there is an opportunity to anchor your professional output in your personal values.

If you feel the disconnect between who you are at home and who you are at the office, consider this a challenge: Are you aligning your daily tasks with your core purpose?

Success is not just about the outcomes we produce; it is about the lives we impact and the integrity we maintain along the way. By leaning into your community, staying committed to your growth, and finding your "salt and light," you can build a career that matters.
